The ATOR pathway is a structured, art therapy-based Out-Reach professional development programme that builds on the foundations established in the In-Reach Programme.
The pathway focuses on practical application. It supports learners to use reflective questioning and art therapy-informed techniques with the populations or client groups they serve.
During practice, detailed feedback is provided to help participants observe artworks phenomenologically. This differs from traditional art appreciation. The focus is not on judging the artwork, but on noticing visual cues that may offer access points into the client’s inner world, including their struggles, unspoken experiences, and psychological pain.
It supports participants in deepening reflective capacity, becoming more aware of personal biases and assumptions, developing applied understanding, and engaging more intentionally with art therapy-informed processes within appropriate contexts.
Participants will engage in:
continued experiential art-making and reflective integration, supported by Western psychological frameworks and Eastern philosophical understanding
deeper understanding of the Expressive Therapies Continuum (ETC) and how it works within the art therapy process
application of art-based processes within relational and professional settings, supporting stronger interdisciplinary dialogue
observation of process, response, and meaning-making in others, while developing the capacity to remain grounded and credible amidst diverse and sometimes inconsistent representations of art therapy
The pathway is scaffolded in nature and requires sustained engagement.
