Online Art Therapy Programs are designed to give the public a taste of art therapy services. Many people wonder how art therapy is conducted, who is suitable for it, and why it is beneficial. With so many psychological services available, what makes art therapy unique and helpful? ATA Malaysia’s art therapy program is specifically designed for Asians, especially Malaysians. The registered art therapist began her self-inquiry journey by using art-making processes to find her purpose in life. She learned theories and practices from a Western perspective, integrated them locally from an Asian understanding, and gained exposure to international standards. This unique program is now available for others to enjoy.
The Online Art Therapy Professional Program is for individuals committed to a career that involves helping others and relieving their suffering. Art therapy consists of two main components: art and therapy. Participants must have knowledge of art materials, movements, or drama, depending on their chosen modality. At ATA, we focus on visual arts, using different materials corresponding to a framework that helps us understand the client’s artwork. Participants also need to acquire knowledge of human development across the lifespan, psychological theories, and the continuum of therapy work. They also need qualities such as empathy, compassion, listening, and questioning skills.
Before enrolling in a professional art therapy program, there are two prerequisite courses that must be completed. The first is an online basic art therapy course, and the second is an online experiential art therapy program. These courses will help determine if the individual is suitable for the art therapy program and able to adapt to the different modes of learning.
ATA has been offering a non-accredited professional art therapy program in Malaysia for the past 15 years. As a registered art therapist, Bee who graduated from the West, she is dedicated to introducing a practical art therapy approach to Malaysia. The program is designed based on her self-inquiry, self-innovation, and personal-proven approach, and the theories have been tested with different populations to validate their practicality in the real world. The program is comprehensive, highly reflective, and creates awareness among participants who embark on this journey.
